Clubtails

Gomphidae are one of Ohio’s largest odonate families, with species specialized for running water (lotic), and others specialized for different forms of still water. As illustrated by the distribution maps below, some of the species are relatively uncommon, and some of the species have relatively short flight periods (the flight season in a specific locality is usually shorter than the season for the entire state).

Photo ID tip for Clubtails: This group is especially tricky. Try to get as many angles as possible. If you are lucky, they will sit and let you get a few shots.
